I wish that I could be
as slender as my shadow
early in the morning.
Its long fingers stroking the dewy grass,
vanishingly thin legs
bobbing frantically as I run.
I wish that I were
as beautiful as my reflection in that lake
eyes green and blue
and shining.
I wish that I was a wild thing
a spirit like rain
or wind.
I wish that I deserved
that soft look in his eyes
that little smile.
I am no gem.
I am unique not because of my facets
But because of my flaws.
I am more like that fossil
You found in my garden
A ghost of something that used to be alive.
Or those frozen old elms
holding their bare winter branches
over the path like dancers.
Now there are mulberries
staining my lips.
There are twigs in my hair,
And I am happy.
How did you find me here?
Elbow deep in mud
Barefoot with bugs in my hair
I am not one of your pixels
And I don’t want to be inside
Any box.
Not that house,
Not that screen,
Not that white picket fence.
Why did you come looking?
Do you want to learn to dance
In the rain, with your arms in the air?
I can show you how to pet a bee
How to climb a fence
How to break a spiderweb with a smile.
How long will you remain
a solemn spoken vow
before returning to the dawn chorus?
I will sit with a cup of dew
and hold my breath.
I am listening.
