These are all juveniles of the Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens), so I must’ve stumbled on a nesting aggregation. They larvae aggregate just prior to metamorphosis.
Nonetheless, this is the largest number of newts I’ve ever seen in one place. A metropolis, if you will.
