Velvet Ants

Welp, I no sooner post about some of the weirder insect families than we have a bug zoo and our office becomes (wonderfully) inundated with some awesome insects!  These Mutillids (Velvet Ants) are one of my faves.  Just look how cute and soft they are! (Also, they have one of the most painful stings known to man, but, but…)  The Velvet Ants are not true ants, remember…the females are wingless and resemble large furry ants.  Sadly, they are idiobiont ectoparasitoids (is that not awesome?) on ground nesting bees.  But I forgive them because they are cute.

Isn't she SO CUTE?!??!

Isn’t she SO CUTE?!??!  This is a Dasymutilla sp. (common name Cow Killer)

I don't like the flash quite as much...makes them look harsh

The colours are all wrong when you use flash.

I got this cool effect by accidentally leaving the flash on and then decreasing the shutter speed
