  1. They sure do look happy, the mama and all those babies as well! The couple of chicks that got to ride warm on the mother were particularly lucky! All those bright red heads! What amazes me is that for all that you see them swimming in the water, they look dry! I guess they would have to have water repellant feathers, and they seem to do a great job of that; they are remarkably fluffy!

    • They do have special oils on their feathers that repel the water. They produce the oils in glands at the base of the feathers and then stroke their feathers with their bills to distribute the oils! Actually, I took these photos in June hahaha, just found them!
