A funny little story for a Friday…
We were sampling in the apple orchards a couple of weeks ago, and at one orchard, a manager approached us. Although we are typically very careful to communicate with the growers when we will be sampling in the orchards, in this case a collaborator had let us down, and had failed to inform the manager that we would be sampling there.
So the manager had watched our field vehicle drive into the orchard and disappear. An hour or two later, he followed us in and I went to talk to him and explain our research and our process. He explained that he had no idea we were going to be there or who we were.
“I was worried you were terrorists!” he exclaimed.
“Worse,” I said grimly, “We’re scientists.”
