Take a hike: Volcan Poas and the dark forest

Volcan Poas is reportedly the most visited site in Costa Rica and also the largest active crater in the world. Much of the time (including my last trip to Costa Rica), the crater is blanketed in a heavy cloud and you can’t see anything.  This year, we were lucky enough to catch some good glimpses of the crater and lagoon.

Being me, I couldn’t resist a little hike around the top of the volcano. This is an amazing montane forest, cool in temperature and just cool! My friend told me that they call this a “dark forest”, and I can see why.

Isn’t this a neat looking forest?
