Allowables, by Nikki Giovanni

Allowables

I killed a spider

Not a muderous brown recluse

Nor even a black widow

And if the truth were told this

Was only a small

Sort of papery spider

Who should have run

When I picked up the book

But she didn’t

And she scared me

And I smashed her

I don’t think

I’m allowed

To kill something

Because I am

Frightened

  2. You just summed up the human animal on animals in general, big or small, murderous or harmless. ‘I fear, therefore I kill.’ Try curiosity next time, in place of fear, and see where it leads!

    Nice prose, no matter. 😀

  3. I read this poem on Facebook last week and was reminded of it today when even though I was hyperventilating and my heart was racing, I carried a spider outside to my garden. I hope it is ok that I shared it on Facebook, too. Thank you for your art and wisdom.
