The American Dipper

A new life bird for me! We spotted this guy up at June Lake in the Mt. St. Helens national monument. Dippers are adorable; I didn’t get any good photos of this one because it was in the middle of the lake, but the water does make for some attractive shots…even if the bird is blurry haha.

American Dipper
Looking suitably chub (All About Birds describes this bird as “chunky” (rude), also North America’s only truly “aquatic” songbird. getting loose with language there, AAB)

*I kind of love the way the Irish pronounce this word, like “cray-ture” so that’s how I pronounce it in my head now

  2. We see these lovely birds quite often on our rivers in the south west of the UK. They look very similar but are more clearly marked with white bibs – looking like waiters bobbing to take your order.
